How can someone living with an incurable autoimmune disease embrace uncertainty? Stability and security are exchanged for unpredictable health and all its repercussions. Those of us living with Lupus deal with this type of uncertainty everyday, wondering if (or more likely, when) the next flare will happen or how tired we’ll be or what level of pain we’ll wake up to every day.
Living well with Lupus means learning to understand and even embrace uncertainty. Recognizing that nothing is certain for anyone—even the healthiest among us—is the first step. Secondly, embracing the doubts means facing our fears head on—shining a light on the darkest, scariest places in our minds. By gaining an awareness of what scares us about Lupus, we’re then able to do research to obtain the knowledge we need to counter the fear with solutions or at least gain the ability to create a more realistic shift in our thinking.
As a Lupus patient, I work hard to keep my thinking on track and out of the fear of uncertainty zone. I find these quotes to be helpful reminders to embrace uncertainty whenever my fearful thoughts creep in.
